October 29, 2009 – On this day the Kapa’a boys & Girls Club celebrated their annual Halloween party. Over 40 members participated in this event. We had activities planned for members for the whole day. Members engaged in such activities as a costume contest, screaming contest, bubble blowing contest, pudding eating contest, and a donut eating contest. After the games were finished we served members chili and cheese nachos and handed out a candy bag to each member. Everyone who attended this event had a great time. Thank you to all the staff for their hard work in pulling this event off. Mahalo.

On July 28th, 2009, the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii-Kauai Branch went walking with the Mayor of Kauai Bernard Carvalho. The Mayor walks from his office down to Ace Hardware and back on Rice Street every Tuesday. The public is welcome to come and walk with him and on this particular occasion the Boys & Girls Club went walking with him.
The club members had a blast waking with the Mayor. They talked story with the Mayor and he asked them quetions about the club and they asked him what it was like being Mayor. Club members also voiced their concerns about what was important to them and the changes they wanted to see happen on the island. Afterwards the Mayor gave club members a tour of his office and some snacks.
We are very grateful to the Mayor for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with club members so that they can tell him what is important to them in their community. Mahalo to Mayor Bernard Carvalho.

Our Team at Relay for Life 2009
On May 2nd – 3rd the Kapa’a Boys & Girls Club, as well as the Kauai Youth Network, participated in the 2009 Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.
The event this year took place at Hanapepe Stadium, and we managed to have at least one member of our team on the track at all times from 6 pm – 6 am. We all struggled through not having enough sleep, but it was amazing that we all pulled through together to make sure at least one person was on the track at all times.
In the end we manged to raise $2.230 dollars for cancer research, patients, and survivors. We would like to thank everyone who participated in this event, namely the youth and the staff. Thank you very much for a wonderful event and we hope to see everyone again next year!

This past weekend on March 13-15th, The Boys & Girls Club partnered with the YWCA of Kauai to hold the 1st annual Kauai Youth Network Youth Activist Summit. The Kauai Youth Network, orKYN, is a new youth organization sponsored by the YWCA of Kauai and the Boys & Girls Club Kaua’i Branch. The KYN seeks to inspire and assist young people to lead the change they want to see both on Kauai and throughout the world.
The summit was held at the YWCA’s Camp Slogget at beautiful Kokee. 24 youth, as well as various adult volunteers, participated in the summit. The purpose of the summit was for the KYN to come together to form a group of youth who will be actively advocating change for youth issues on the island of Kauai. At the summit we identified the issues facing youth, created a working organizational structure, as well as a mission statement for the organization. We also had tons of fun! If you interested in the KYN please visit our Face Book site at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=47454989638 or contact Christian Naea at cnaea@bgch.com.

The KYN on an amazing hike.

Hey everybody! As you all know the presidential elections are fast approaching. Because of this, we held our own local election at our clubhouse. Our Torch Club and LIT members voted on the two candidates, and in a land slide victory the team of Barack Obama and Joe Biden won!
Having young people mimic the voting process prepares them to be consciencious voters when they become adults. BGCH Kapa’a is proud to be helping develop young people into responsible citizens who participate in the democratic process.
