Our Team at Relay for Life 2009

Our Team at Relay for Life 2009

On May 2nd – 3rd the Kapa’a Boys & Girls Club, as well as the Kauai Youth Network, participated in the 2009 Relay for Life.  The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

The event this year took place at Hanapepe Stadium, and we managed to have at least one member of our team on the track at all times from 6 pm – 6 am.  We all struggled through not having enough sleep, but it was amazing that we all pulled through together to make sure at least one person was on the track at all times.

In the end we manged to raise $2.230 dollars for cancer research, patients, and survivors.  We would like to thank everyone who participated in this event, namely the youth and the staff.  Thank you very much for a wonderful event and we hope to see everyone again next year!

Kauai Youth Network Journey masks showed at local art exhibit

April 17, 2009

April 4th, 2009.  The Kauai Youth Network visited a local art exhibit at the Kukui Grove Shopping center to view the masks they created durring their first annual youth activist summit.  The masks were created in conjunction with the Journey program, and the masks revealed what they really feel inside, instead of what the project to the world outwardly.  It was great to see our groups artwork displayed in public.  If you have a chance to visit and see these displays please do so during normal mall hours.sdc10989

1st Annual Kauai Youth Network Youth Activist Summit

March 19, 2009

This past weekend on March 13-15th, The Boys & Girls Club partnered with the YWCA of Kauai to hold the 1st annual Kauai Youth Network Youth Activist Summit.  The Kauai Youth Network, orKYN, is a new youth organization sponsored by the YWCA of Kauai and the Boys & Girls Club Kaua’i Branch.  The KYN seeks to inspire and assist young people to lead the change they want to see both on Kauai and throughout the world.

The summit was held at the YWCA’s Camp Slogget at beautiful Kokee.  24 youth, as well as various adult volunteers, participated in the summit.  The purpose of the summit was for the KYN to come together to form a group of youth who will be actively advocating change for youth issues on the island of Kauai.  At the summit we identified the issues facing youth, created a working organizational structure, as well as a mission statement for the organization.  We also had tons of fun!  If you interested in the KYN please visit our Face Book site at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=47454989638 or contact Christian Naea at cnaea@bgch.com.

BGCH Kapa’a Presidential Elections

October 16, 2008

Hey everybody!  As you all know the presidential elections are fast approaching.  Because of this, we held our own local election at our clubhouse.  Our Torch Club and LIT members voted on the two candidates, and in a land slide victory the team of Barack Obama and Joe Biden won!

Having young people mimic the voting process prepares them to be consciencious voters when they become adults.  BGCH Kapa’a is proud to be helping develop young people into responsible citizens who participate in the democratic process.
